Leaf Trade’s Casey DiNicola recently sat down with CULTA’s Senior Director of Sales, Jared Miller, to discuss the 710 holiday, extracts, and concentrates, and the significance of using a platform to manage wholesale operations.

“Cannabis is an exit drug, not an entrance drug.”
Founded in 2015, CULTA went through the licensing process for several years to finally open for business in April of 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. They are a vertically integrated operator.
“From the beginning, we’ve been focused on the craft quality of our products,” Jared told us, “We’re all patients ourselves. Simply put, we are ‘patient first’. We don’t sell things we wouldn’t consume ourselves.”
Part of CULTA’s mission (and Jared’s personal mission) has been to educate the public and their patients and to de-stigmatize cannabis. “Cannabis is an exit drug, not an entrance drug.” Jared elaborated that cannabis is a way to directly address the opioid crisis and gives patients the ability to medicate in a way that targets specific ailments.
Dabbing isn’t all about “a blow torch and a banger.”
Many folks are a bit intimidated by vaping. But as Jared explained, “Dabbing isn’t all about blow torch and a banger. There’s a variety of different delivery methods and it’s really all about helping your patients find what’s right for them.”
And there are many reasons to try concentrates. Jared continued, “Potency is what gets people into extracts. You have a much faster onset. You get a wider variety of terpenes that helps you get that ‘whole plant’ experience that you don’t get with other consumption methods.”
Jared had solid advice for budtenders on helping their customers navigate the world of concentrates. “It’s really all about education and explaining the different means of consumption. Trying to take the intimidation out of it. [At CULTA,] we custom-tailor the experiences for our patients. We train all our partners to speak to our products and cannabis products in general.”
CULTA is pushing the envelope in R & D
CULTA made headlines recently by introducing the first tissue culture (T.C.) lab in Maryland. “[The] T.C. lab is a transformative approach to propagation in agriculture. It’s been around for a while, but now it’s growing in popularity in cannabis.”
Jared went on to explain the benefits of tissue culture for cultivators. “It’s a way to ensure redundancy in genetics. You have a clean copy that’s kept in a secure space. You don’t have to worry about pests. It takes up less space than traditional clones. It’s essentially like having a cloud backup of the strains and means to protect the years of work that go into pheno-hunting and developing strains.”
And that’s not the only way CULTA is innovating. CULTA is also expanding its product line into beverages. They are also continuing their research into the lesser-known, minor cannabinoids, as well as expanding their breeding program. “Further down the road,” Jared said, “We’re trying to address our carbon footprint and how we can be even more socially responsible.”

“Fire in. Fire out.”
“As we like to say,” Jared said, “Fire in, fire out. The product quality starts with genetics… From start to finish we’re working with the cleanest material possible to ensure that, in the end, we’re providing the best medicine for our patients.”
It’s this attention to detail that allows CULTA to custom-tailor their product to the experiences of their patients.
Leaf Trade has been invaluable to CULTA’s growth
“I’ve got to give a shout out to James [Leaf Trade CEO and Founder] and Alyssa [Leaf Trade Director of Customer Success]. From the beginning, they have been super helpful,” Jared said. “We’ve grown as companies together. We’re not all spreadsheets and emails anymore. Leaf Trade allows us to keep all our communications in one place.”
Jared went on to mention that Leaf Trade’s other features have been invaluable, such as real-time inventory management and staying organized across several locations. “It’s like a one-stop-shop for customer service and our ability to stay organized… In sales, it’s all about making sure everyone is on the same page. We’re in four different locations, and it’s best to have a central landing spot for that. And that’s how we use Leaf Trade.”
Bonus Takeaway – Jared’s favorite strains
“One thing that makes CULTA unique,” Jared said, “Is that we’re all patients ourselves, myself included. We don’t sell anything that we wouldn’t use ourselves.”
“What we’re most known for is our live, fresh-frozen products. I’m a fan of our Grapefruit Sour Dream, HTFSE, which stands for High Terpene Full Spectrum Extract. [As a] vape cart, it’s a great product. It’s the closest you can get to real flower on the go.”
“Another favorite is our Poochie Love live badder as well as our Sugar Biscuits live badder.”
